Current Status and Possible Future Applications of Marine Current Energy Devices in Malaysia: A Review

Malaysia has a great potential to harness energy in water due its long coastline within the South China Sea and Straits of Malacca. Malaysia's mix could be improved using marine current devices (MCEDs) replace fossil fuel it is predictable compare hydropower, solar photovoltaic (PV), biomass. However, MCEDs not been fully developed Malaysia. The objectives this paper are provide useful background for policymakers or researchers types sites location that applicable This review also discusses issues challenges Five were discussed including tidal range device, stream turbine, wave converter, ocean thermal conversion, salinity gradient energy. These compared their suitability application Among all MCEDs, turbine identified as high commercially viable characteristics low kinetic energy-flux density, speed, tide, shallow water; only fulfill minimum requirement making resources significant enough contribute nation's mix.
